Importance of cleaning gutters before winter
Gutters and downspouts are the circulatory system of your roof. If they clog, water backs up and finds the easiest way out: into your home. In Antioquia, with our heavy rainfall, this is an announced emergency.
The danger of a clogged gutter
During the summer or dry seasons, gutters accumulate dry leaves, dust, sand, and even small animals or bird nests. When the first heavy downpours hit, this mixture turns into a mud plug.
- Overflows: Water overflows the gutter and falls directly onto the facades, ruining the paint and generating green mold.
- Structure rot: If the gutter is attached to the wooden roof structure, retained water will rot the wood in a matter of months.
- Accelerated corrosion: Constant mud rusts the galvanized sheet, perforating the gutter and requiring a total replacement which is much more expensive than cleaning.
When should cleaning be done?
In the Aburrá Valley, we have two main rainy seasons: April-May and October-November. The ideal is to schedule preventive maintenance in February and August.
Why hire a professional?
Cleaning a gutter 6 or 10 meters high is risky. At ImpermeabilizaYA we don't just take out the trash, our protocol includes:
- Pressure washing to unclog downspouts.
- Inspection of gutter supports and hooks.
- Application of asphalt or polyurethane sealants on cracked joints or welds.
Important Fact
An annual professional cleaning costs up to 10 times less than repairing an internal wall damaged by structural moisture due to an overflow.
